Birds of the Mani



There are some birds I have found that live around the area where the Mani people live. 

Mountain Scops-Owl (Otus spilocephalus)

  • is sometimes referred to as the spotted scops owl. It is locally common in its main habitat which covers some parts of Asia, including Bhutan, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Taiwan, and Thailand.
  • Length 18-20cm. Wing length 129-152mm. Tail length 65-89mm. Weight 53-112g
  • The Mountain Scops Owl is a nocturnal bird, starting its activity during and after dusk. Frequents deep and shady gullies and ravines, foraging in the lower parts of the densest forest trees
  • Feeds mainly on insects such as beetles and moths. Probably hawks insects in the air, and hunts below the canopy or near the ground

Red-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus javanicus)
  • The Red-billed Malkoha is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family.
  • It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.
Abbott's Babbler (Malacocincla abbotti)

  • is a species of bird in the Pellorneidae family.
  • It is widely distributed along the Himalayas in South Asia and extending into the forests of Southeast Asia.
  • They are short-tailed and stout birds which forage in pairs in dense undergrowth close to the ground and their presences is indicated by their distinctive calls.
  • The adult Abbott's Babbler is a nondescript brown, short-tailed babbler that moves about in the low vegetation often near streams and in the vicinity of tree ferns and tangled vegetation.
Jungle Crow or Large-billed Crow (Corvus macrorhynchos)

  • is a widespread Asian species of crow.
  • It is very adaptable and is able to survive on a wide range of food sources, making it capable of colonizing new areas, due to which it is often considered a nuisance, especially on islands.
Ruby-cheeked Sunbird(Chalcoparia singalensis)
  • is a species of bird in the Nectariniidae family.
  • It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montage forests.
Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis)
·         is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but now considered an Old World flycatcher.
·         They are distinctive black and white birds with a long tail that is held upright as they forage on the ground or perch conspicuously.
·          Occurring across most of the Indian Subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, they are common birds in urban gardens as well as forests.
·         They are particularly well known for their songs and were once popular as cagebirds. The Oriental Magpie-Robin is national bird for Bangladesh.
Tickell's Blue-Flycatcher(Cyornis tickelliae)

  • is a small passerine bird in the flycatcher family.
  • This is an insectivorous species which breeds in tropical Asia, from the Indian Subcontinent eastwards to Southeast Asia.
  • Its range stretches across all the countries from India to Indonesia.
  • They are blue on the upperparts and the throat and breast are rufous.
  •  They are found in dense scrub to forest habitats.
There is a list of names of birds that Mani People usually see but I have not been able to find the name we use for the birds to be able to look up this birds.
Birds of the Mani People
                For the Mani peoples birds are hunted and eaten.  They have do not have really any other use for the Mani people.  Mani people do not get to eat these birds that much because they can be hard to kill because they are relatively large species.
